Mariah Carey Crowned the Most Popular Christmas Song of All Time, Data Shows
As the holiday season returns to Canadian airwaves and playlists, one question continues to spark festive debate: what is the most popular Christmas song of all time? While opinions range from Mariah Carey’s pop classic to the raw charm of The Pogues, a data-driven analysis now offers a clear answer.
Using a mathematical formula that combines streaming figures, YouTube views and record sales, Mariah Carey’s “All I Want for Christmas Is You” has officially been named the most popular Christmas song ever.
The analysis examined the top five most-streamed Christmas songs of all time alongside the five most-streamed Christmas songs released in the past decade, based on Official UK Chart data as of December 3, 2021. To ensure fairness across generations, streams were converted into sales (100 streams equaling one sale), YouTube views were scaled (600 views equaling one sale), and total figures were adjusted based on the number of years since each song’s release.

The results confirm Carey’s long-standing dominance. Her 1994 hit ranked first across all major categories, including streams, YouTube views and total sales, ultimately achieving the highest average annual “sales” score. Wham!’s Last Christmas and Band Aid’s Do They Know It’s Christmas? followed closely in traditional metrics, reflecting the enduring appeal of 1980s holiday classics.
However, newer releases proved formidable competitors. Ariana Grande’s Santa Tell Me and Justin Bieber’s Mistletoe performed exceptionally well when adjusted for age, with Grande finishing a close second overall—signaling a potential generational shift in Christmas music favourites.
Michael Bublé, widely regarded as a modern holiday staple in Canada, also placed strongly with It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas, reinforcing his reputation as a contemporary Christmas icon.
The final rankings highlight how digital platforms have reshaped holiday listening habits, allowing newer songs to rise quickly while classic tracks continue to thrive through tradition and nostalgia.
For now, Mariah Carey remains the undisputed Queen of Christmas—but with streaming trends evolving and younger audiences shaping festive playlists, the crown may not remain unchallenged forever.

As one classic lyric reminds us: Merry Christmas, everyone.
