I decided to pursue dental school because of my personal experiences growing up. As a child and teenager, I faced numerous dental challenges that caused significant discomfort and frustration. These experiences instilled in me a deep empathy for others dealing with similar issues and inspired me to learn how to prevent and treat dental problems. I wanted to turn my personal hardship into a meaningful way to improve others’ oral health and overall well-being.

Additionally, I’ve always been a positive person who values the power of a smile. I believe a healthy, confident smile has the ability to brighten someone’s day and boost their self-esteem. Starting over in a new country with a different culture and professional landscape was daunting, but my determination and the skills I had developed back home enabled me to adapt quickly. After five years of persistence and hard work, I successfully opened two dental offices in Canada, establishing a strong presence in the Canadian healthcare system.

Reflecting on my journey—from a single office in Durrës to two thriving practices in Toronto—I am proud of the growth, resilience, and commitment to excellence that have shaped my path. This experience is a testament to the power of perseverance, adaptability, and the belief that with dedication, dreams can become reality.

Can you share some highlights from your recent visit to the Align center in Costa Rica with other Canadian dentists? What new innovations and technologies did you explore?

Visiting the Costa Rica Invisalign Centre was an unforgettable experience and a true privilege. Being one of only 13 Canadian doctors invited to attend, I felt honored to participate in this exceptional opportunity. The world’s largest Invisalign Centre left a lasting impression, with its state-of-the-art technology, sleek modern facilities, and an environment dedicated to innovation and collaboration.

During my visit, I had the privilege of meeting their expert team, who shared invaluable insights on the latest Invisalign techniques and advancements. Their passion for pushing the boundaries of orthodontics was inspiring. I also connected with fellow professionals from around the globe, exchanging ideas and gaining fresh perspectives on incorporating Invisalign treatments into my practice. This unique blend of hands-on learning and professional networking reinforced my commitment to delivering cutting-edge care to my patients.

One of the most exciting aspects of the visit was the introduction of Invisalign’s new palatal expander appliance. Limited to a select group of doctors at the time, this groundbreaking innovation addresses patients with narrow upper jaws by gradually and gently widening the palate. Balancing a busy dental practice and family life requires careful planning, teamwork, and flexibility. I’m fortunate to have my husband as my biggest supporter, and together we ensure our days are thoughtfully organized. My mornings are dedicated to my family—I prepare breakfast, pack lunches, and get the kids ready for school. I also make time to prepare meals in advance so they have something healthy and ready when they return home, especially on evenings when my work hours run late.

At the office, I’m supported by an incredible team that helps ensure everything runs smoothly, allowing me to focus on both my professional and personal commitments. I adjust my work schedule to align with my children’s school hours whenever possible, ensuring I’m present for them during key moments of their day.

Of course, there are times when late evenings at the office are unavoidable, and those moments can be challenging. However, maintaining this balance wouldn’t be possible without the support of my husband, the dedication of my team, and a strong commitment to planning ahead. In the end, the time I spend with my family makes every effort worthwhile. Juggling these responsibilities isn’t always easy, but it’s a constant reminder of the importance of both my professional goals and the love and care I provide for my family.

What advice would you give to internationally-trained dentists aspiring to become licensed in Canada, based on your own experiences?

To all international dentists aspiring to get licensed in Canada, I want to share some insights from my own journey and the experiences of others I’ve had the privilege of supporting.

First and foremost, understand that the path is challenging, but it’s a long-term investment in your career and future. Don’t underestimate the importance of the resources and information available to you. Many international dentists encounter valuable guidance but fail to fully utilize it. My advice is straightforward: take full advantage of the information you have, don’t take it for granted, and start the process as early as possible. The sooner you begin, the closer you’ll be to achieving your goals.

Yes, this journey can be difficult, but remember that every step you take is bringing you closer to a rewarding future. Persevere, stay focused, and work hard. Even when the process feels overwhelming, keep in mind that your patience and determination will ultimately pay off.
